Switzerland Travel Guide: Why I Keep Going Back to the Most Beautiful Country in Europe

Some countries impress you once. A few keep calling you back. Switzerland belongs firmly in the second category.

By the time I visited Switzerland in December 2019, it was already my fifth trip to the country. Most travellers spend years dreaming about visiting Switzerland once. Somehow, life had given me the opportunity to return again and again, and every visit felt different.

One trip was about mountain roads. Another was about scenic train journeys. One was about family memories. Another was inspired by Bollywood and the famous DDLJ shooting locations. Yet despite all those visits, Switzerland continues to surprise me. The mountains never seem smaller, the lakes never seem less beautiful, and the villages never lose their charm.

If somebody asked me to create a list of countries that every traveller should visit at least once, Switzerland would comfortably make my top five. Not because it is perfect, but because it offers something for almost everyone. Families, couples, solo travellers, photographers, adventure seekers, road trip lovers, and even Bollywood fans can all find their own version of Switzerland. Although I have explored much more of Switzerland over multiple visits, I have deliberately left out a few beautiful destinations such as Geneva, Zurich, Engelberg, Montreux, and Lausanne. Not because they are not worth visiting, but because this guide is designed around a realistic 5–7 day Switzerland itinerary for first-time visitors. Trying to cover everything in one trip often means spending more time travelling than experiencing the country itself.

One piece of advice I strongly recommend is to rent a car if your budget allows. Switzerland’s public transport system is probably one of the best in the world, and my first trip was entirely by train and bus. While it was efficient and easy, I often found myself looking out of the window wishing I could stop for a photograph, explore a small village, or take a detour towards a mountain road that looked interesting.

That freedom is what made me switch to rental cars on every subsequent visit.

Some of my favourite memories of Switzerland were never planned. They happened during random stops beside lakes, quiet mountain villages, scenic viewpoints, and roads that were not even part of the itinerary. A car allows you to experience Switzerland at your own pace and discover places that rarely appear in travel guides.

For me, that flexibility transformed a great trip into an unforgettable one.

Why Switzerland Is So Special

Every country has beautiful places. Very few countries are beautiful almost everywhere. That is Switzerland’s superpower.

The moment you leave the airport, the scenery begins. Lakes sit beside roads, snow-covered peaks appear in the distance, and villages look as though they were designed specifically for postcards. Even train stations seem cleaner and more organised than many city centres around the world.

The country also combines natural beauty with remarkable efficiency. Trains arrive on time, roads are excellent, and public transport reaches even remote mountain villages. Safety levels are among the highest in Europe, making Switzerland one of the easiest countries in the world to explore independently.

What makes Switzerland truly unique, however, is its variety. Within a few hours, you can move from cosmopolitan cities to Alpine villages, from glacier viewpoints to lakeside promenades, and from luxury resorts to quiet countryside. For a relatively small country, the diversity is extraordinary. So below are must do places in Switzerland:

Interlaken: Where Most Swiss Dreams Begin

If somebody asked me to recommend just one base for a first-time Switzerland trip, I would probably choose Interlaken.

Located between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz and surrounded by some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in Europe, Interlaken feels like the Switzerland many people imagine before they arrive. It combines stunning landscapes, adventure activities, excellent transport connections, and easy access to some of the country’s most famous attractions.

For Indian travellers, Interlaken also carries a special significance because it is home to the Yash Chopra Statue, a tribute to the filmmaker who transformed Switzerland into a dream destination for generations of Bollywood fans.

Whether you enjoy paragliding, hiking, lake cruises, or simply sitting in a café watching the mountains, Interlaken is one of the must visit places in Switzerland.

Jungfraujoch: Standing on Top of Europe

Few experiences in Switzerland feel as dramatic as standing on Jungfraujoch, often called the Top of Europe.

The journey itself is part of the attraction. Trains climb through mountains and tunnels before emerging at one of Europe’s highest railway stations. Once there, visitors are rewarded with glaciers, snowfields, observation decks, and views that seem to stretch forever.

Yes, it is expensive. Yes, it can be crowded. But some experiences become famous for a reason.

Jungfraujoch deserves its reputation and remains one of the best places to visit in Switzerland.

Lauterbrunnen: The Valley That Looks Like a Fairytale

Many people believe Lauterbrunnen inspired Tolkien’s Rivendell. Whether that story is true or not, it is easy to understand why.

The valley is surrounded by towering cliffs and spectacular waterfalls. Traditional Swiss villages sit beneath dramatic mountain peaks, creating one of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe.

Walking through Lauterbrunnen feels less like sightseeing and more like stepping into a fantasy novel.

For first-time visitors planning a Switzerland itinerary, this valley should be near the very top of the list.

Grindelwald: The Perfect Alpine Village

If Switzerland were forced to choose a postcard village, Grindelwald would be a strong candidate.

The village offers incredible views of the Eiger, excellent hiking opportunities, mountain railways, and a relaxed atmosphere that encourages visitors to slow down and enjoy their surroundings.

Unlike some destinations that are beautiful but difficult to access, Grindelwald combines stunning scenery with excellent infrastructure, making it ideal for families and first-time visitors.

Zermatt and the Matterhorn

The Matterhorn is probably Switzerland’s most recognisable mountain.

Its distinctive shape appears on postcards, calendars, travel advertisements, and even chocolate packaging around the world.

Yet no photograph truly prepares you for seeing it in person.

The car-free village of Zermatt adds to the experience, creating an atmosphere that feels both peaceful and uniquely Swiss. Whether you visit during summer or winter, Zermatt remains one of the must visit places in Switzerland.

Lucerne: The Most Charming Swiss City

Lucerne offers a different side of Switzerland.

The city combines lakes, mountains, medieval architecture, and modern amenities into one compact destination. Highlights include the famous Chapel Bridge, Lake Lucerne, the Lion Monument, and nearby Mount Pilatus.

For many visitors, Lucerne becomes their favourite Swiss city because it balances natural beauty and urban convenience so well.

Lake Lungern: The Switzerland We Imagine

One of my personal favourites is Lake Lungern.

While destinations like Interlaken and Lucerne attract larger crowds, Lake Lungern offers the kind of scenery that makes travellers stop and stare. The turquoise water, dramatic mountain backdrop, and peaceful atmosphere combine to create one of the most photogenic locations in the country.

It is also famous among Bollywood fans because scenes from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge were filmed here.

Whether you are a movie lover or not, Lake Lungern is one of those places that reminds you why Switzerland appears on so many bucket lists.

Gstaad: Luxury Meets Alpine Charm

Gstaad has long been associated with luxury travel, celebrity visitors, and exclusive hotels. Yet despite its reputation, the village somehow manages to remain welcoming and charming.

Walking through Gstaad feels like walking through a living postcard. Traditional chalets sit beside luxury boutiques, while mountain scenery provides a spectacular backdrop.

For Indian travellers, Gstaad also holds a special place because of its connection to Bollywood and DDLJ.

St. Moritz: Switzerland’s Luxury Playground

If luxury travel had a Swiss capital, St. Moritz would probably claim the title.

The town has hosted Winter Olympics, attracted royalty and celebrities, and built a reputation as one of the world’s premier mountain resorts.

Even if luxury hotels are not your style, the scenery alone makes the visit worthwhile.

Bern: Switzerland’s Underrated Capital

While many visitors focus on mountains and lakes, Switzerland’s capital deserves attention too.

Bern’s old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with arcades, fountains, historic buildings, and a relaxed atmosphere. It offers a slower, more authentic side of Switzerland that many travellers appreciate.

If your itinerary allows, spend at least a day exploring the city.

Things To Do In Switzerland

One of the reasons Switzerland appeals to such a wide range of travellers is the sheer variety of experiences available. You can spend the morning riding one of the world’s most scenic train journeys, the afternoon cruising across a mountain lake, and the evening enjoying fondue inside a traditional Alpine village.

For adventure lovers, Switzerland offers hiking, skiing, paragliding, mountain biking, glacier walks, and scenic drives through some of Europe’s most spectacular landscapes. Families can enjoy lake cruises, mountain railways, and interactive attractions, while photographers will find opportunities around almost every corner.

If somebody asked me to summarise the best things to do in Switzerland, I would keep it simple: ride a panoramic train, visit the Swiss Alps, cruise on a lake, explore a mountain village, eat local food, and leave enough time to simply enjoy the scenery.

Scenic Train Journeys in Switzerland

Switzerland is home to some of the world’s most famous train journeys.

The Glacier Express connects Zermatt and St. Moritz through spectacular mountain scenery.

The Bernina Express crosses dramatic Alpine landscapes and is often considered one of the most beautiful train rides in the world.

The GoldenPass Line links Lucerne, Interlaken, and Montreux while passing through some of Switzerland’s most scenic regions.

Even travellers who normally prefer road trips should experience at least one Swiss train journey.

Swiss Food You Must Try

Swiss food is often overlooked, which is unfortunate because the country offers much more than chocolate.

Fondue remains Switzerland’s most famous dish. Sharing a pot of melted cheese on a cold evening feels like a Swiss rite of passage.

Raclette is another favourite, featuring melted cheese served with potatoes and accompaniments.

Rösti, originally a farmer’s dish, has become a national classic.

And then there is the chocolate.

Even after multiple visits, I still find it difficult to leave Switzerland without buying more chocolate than I planned.

Switzerland in Summer vs Winter

One of the most common travel questions is whether Switzerland is better in summer or winter.

The honest answer is both.

Summer brings hiking trails, green valleys, mountain lakes, outdoor cafés, and long daylight hours. Winter transforms the country into a snow-covered wonderland filled with ski resorts, Christmas markets, frozen landscapes, and cosy chalets.

If you love hiking and outdoor adventures, visit during summer.

If you love snow, fireplaces, and winter scenery, choose winter.

Personally, I would happily return in either season.

Switzerland Travel Costs and Budget Tips

There is no easy way to say this.

Switzerland is expensive.

Hotels, restaurants, transportation, and attractions can quickly add up. However, there are ways to manage costs. The Swiss Travel Pass often provides excellent value for visitors using trains and public transport. Supermarkets such as Coop and Migros help reduce food expenses, while staying slightly outside major tourist centres can significantly lower accommodation costs.

Switzerland may be expensive, but the quality of the experience usually justifies the cost.

Switzerland for Families, Couples and Solo Travellers

One of Switzerland’s greatest strengths is its versatility.

Families appreciate the safety, efficient transport system, and wide range of activities. Couples find romance almost everywhere, from lakeside walks to mountain villages. Solo travellers enjoy the ease of transportation and the welcoming atmosphere.

Few destinations work equally well for all three groups.

Switzerland does.

Final Thoughts

After five visits, I still find it difficult to explain exactly why Switzerland keeps pulling me back.

Perhaps it is the mountains.

Perhaps it is the lakes.

Perhaps it is the villages.

Or perhaps it is the feeling that every journey through Switzerland still has the ability to surprise me.

Very few destinations live up to the expectations created by years of photographs, movies, and travel stories.

Switzerland does.

Whether you arrive for the Swiss Alps, scenic train journeys, luxury resorts, family adventures, or simply to experience one of the world’s most beautiful countries, you will probably leave with memories that last a lifetime.

And if you happen to be a Bollywood fan, Switzerland deserves a second story altogether.
